Default Where do you think rap was derived from?

Just thought I'd throw in a controversial discussion to where YOU think rap started at.

I'll throw my opinion in after a few replies.

To my knowledge, it all started on the east coast.

I've always thought it was the Sugar Hill Gang and the bands around them.

I don't really know, though.

Rap was a growth and extention of several diffferent styles from the 80's. I know is started in New York, but i forget which borough is credited with it. It started out as strictly party music, Sugarhill Gang was the first recorded rap song i belive, and if not it was the first one to reach commercial success.

Interesting little known fact, no one in the Sugarhill Gang was an actual "rapper", and none of them wrote their own verses for the song or any other song for that matter. They were basically pawns put in place by their record label to make money.

I think that rap was founded around 1969 by forming a sub-genre off of jazz music.
