I'm not interested in becoming a real designer however I would really love to learn how to make clothes for myself. Altho I have no idea where to start, how to learn.

How do I learn how to make menswear? Are there books I can read that you would recommend? I just don't know where to get started

Best place to start is your own sewing machine. Altering your own clothes, learning how to sew a STRAIGHT hem (easier said then done) and finding a style or trend you like a is a good start. Whether its streetwear or conservative geek chic I am sure if you start with your own wardrobe and the craft/material shop you will have a good start.

FashionPassion is on the right track. Not sure about the two replies.

Get something old that you don't mind cutting up... and cut it where all the seams are... this way, you get all the pattern pieces in front of you, and you will start to understand how it all works.

But, if you have no experience at all, I really recommend finding a short course first.

Either use:

Online tutorials from youtube or something or
there are some really good books to help you out there

If you want to make clothes you obviously need a pattern and they have instructions on them so you cant go wrong that easily :)

The best thing that you can do is learn how to make pattern for the design you want and learn sewing also especially sewing in all types of sewing machines. :p

I took a year at art school for apparel design, and first of all to get started: learn to sew!!
I will suggest this awesome book, it is fantastic in helping you learning to sew:

http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Sewing-Readers-Digest (http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Sewing-Readers-Digest/dp/0762104201/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243565198&sr=8-1)

Check your local craigslist ads [craigslist.com] for sewing machines, then get some patterns via wal-mart or some fabric [ Jo-anne's] and start sewing!

its so much fun! Read up on magazines and find old clothes you dont use anymore and just go with it.
