Diamonds are made of pure carbon, initially starting out as coal millions of years ago diamonds are heated and compressed into carbon crystals. They are very tightly packed groupings of carbon atoms. Each carbon atom is nicely grouped with its neighboring carbon atoms, and it is bonded so well that the bond is unbreakable. This is reason why diamonds are so hard. Loose diamonds are even used as industrial tools, they are used as drills for drilling into a substance which has less hardness than diamond.
