Hey there,
I have to choose an engagement ring and i was wondering if anybody had any thoughts on the question on yellow gold versus white gold. I initially thought the white gold looked too much like silver but the idea is starting to grow on me.
Would love your thoughts and feedback.

Pure gold is extremely malleable and soft, too soft in fact to be used for jewelry. It must be combined with other metals in order to become tough and durable enough to be formed into a fine piece of jewelry. The metals added to gold are called the alloys.
Yellow gold is alloyed with silver while white gold is alloyed with nickel. Both also use copper and zinc as alloying elements. So, the difference between white and yellow gold is the type of alloy used in each. There is no real difference in value between the two; it is merely matter of preference and personal taste.

well, i think it actually depends on what design the ring has.
like in some designs, with diamonds, yellow looks really nice.
my moms engagement ring is white gold and it has 2 rows of diamonds [not really diamonds, some stone, i think or diamond carats only] && i dont think it looks very...um... well, its not the best looking engagement ring.
its looks good as a normal, casual ring but i wouldnt be very keen on having a engagement ring/wedding ring like that
but, everyone has a different taste (:
but, i really thinks it depends on the design (:

It can depend on the girl but I find white gold and platinum for that matter far more timeless, classic and elegant, then again I've never been a huge fan of gold to begin with.
yes.. it depends to the design... but for me i prefer a yellow gold...

I agree with finch. White gold just gives off a more elegant look to jewelries - something that yellow gold rarely delivers.

ok in my opinion white gold looks more nice with a big diamond! because if is a little rock the ring can look like another ring in your hand;)

I wear both. Usually white gold in winter/spring (when my skintone is more pale) and yellow gold in the summer/fall (when I have a tan).

If your are black use the white gold and if you are white use the yellow color
This is the second time i've heard you refer to a black or white person based on a fashion type question. You gotta be the most lost person on this site. You actually want someone to listen to your dumb advice. You are really stupid!

Yellow gold is expensive than white

I prefer the way white gold looks but it's annoying that white gold can start to yellow or go dull after only a few years. It needs to be re-plated with rhodium when that happens (it's the rhodium that gives it the white color so to be honest, white gold is a bit of a con, it's actually the rhodium you're seeing).

well ...
i dont think that if yu actually pay alot for a white gold ring, it would start turning yellow. my white gold stuff never turned yellow =]
could be coz i hardly ever wear my gold jewelry but thats besides the point.
&im still sticking to my idea. a ring with both WHiTE&YELLOW goldd [wiith a diamond/stone somewhere on it]
its timeless && chiic !
& omg. i just hate engagment or wedding rings that have colored stones on them !! my cousiin's wedding ring had tonnes of little costly reddish stones (NOT rubies) and i think that it doesnt go with every outfit, you know ?
like a ring with diamond on it match every single out fit. you knOw ?

It's not besides the point, it's probably the very reason your white gold hasn't yellowed or gone dull. But to be fair, I didn't say all white gold yellows, I said it can yellow and/OR go dull.

white gold, has a more pure feeling and look than yellow gold. They're both nice, but white gold or platinum for an engagement ring.

alright then :D
you've a point there.
but my mom also only wears white gold and she's like, always wearing a couple of necklaces lol.
my point is, she wears her white golds a LOT and if they do go dull or yellow [never seen it happen], she puts the ones that are like that in this small cup thing and puts this mix of like, detergent or dishwash liquid or something with water and something else for around half a day and it gets all sparkly again. << thats how you deal with white gold going dull :D
and shes also had her white gold bracelet get another layer [free of charge because the jeweller guy liked us & we were his costumers...maybe thats why lol] but um, it actually came out yellow gold and white gold. lol. the moron wrecked it [whoever that did it]
anyway ... white gold and yellow gold together is timless and gorgeous and V.O.G.U.E
definitely white gold!! i find yellow gold abit tacky.
white gold's classy :)

As per jewelry designer Romika Johar, who specializes in the field of custom built orders..It also depends upon the design as well, not just the skin tone. Some designs show well with yellow gold only.

i have a white gold engagement ring. when we went to buy it, i didn't know much about jewelry, and it wasn't til a recent trip to the carribbean that i discovered it had gone yellow. (not happy!!) so i went into a jewelry store over there and they told me about the whole dipping thing, and i wasn't very happy. i hadn't been told this when i bought it, so to be honest, i would get him to fork out for platinum! i've only had my ring for about a year and a half, and for it to turn yellow was so disappointing. I'm going to take it back to the store, as much as i love my man, I'm not having him pay for something that isn't right. good luck!

I like both mixed ! My wedding band is white gold and yellow gold (my husband & I actually designed it ourselves).
So this way it matches with whatever other jewelry I decide to wear whether real or costume jewelry.
