The powerful fashion federations of France, Italy, the United States and Britain have decided to address the controversy over ultra-thin models, the French body said on Thursday.

The fashion industry has been widely attacked for promoting the kind of stick-thin images which critics say contribute to eating disorders in young women and some countries have taken cautious measures to bring more weight onto the catwalks.

The Madrid fashion industry barred models below a certain body mass from Madrid fashion shows in September and organizers of New York's fashion shows this month issued guidelines to tackle the problem, although stopping short of banning them.

"All actors concerned must get involved in the matter of information," France's fashion federation said on Thursday, adding delegates from Italy's, Britain's and America's fashion bodies had discussed the issue jointly at talks on Wednesday.

"La Federation de la Couture, la Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, the British Fashion Council ... decided to participate in this reflection, in liaison with respective public authorities."

I absolutely agree with the new ways on accepting the models on fashion shows.
Sometimes, they are so thin that it isn't even pretty and they make young women want their bodies and make stupid diets.
I hope this kind of "moviment" against anorexic models and women has results!

i think the media portrays a totally unrealistic view of the "ideal" female figure. totally for excluding models medically diagnosed as underweight from catwalk shows. these girls really are too thin: the way garments hang on them is similiar to that of a coathanger.

That's it, coathanger! I agree this word. The ideal woman figure should be wavy instead of stick!:p

Absolutely, I'm so glad there is so much agreement on this issue. There is way too much emphasis put on what is "ideal" in society that we forget to enjoy ourselves for what we are - drop dead gorgeous baby! :D No matter what our body type.

harley, your image of the coat hanger is right on - makes me think of those dreadful bumps left in the shoulders of clothes left on the hanger too long. I'd rather not see clothes hung that way... in the closet or on the runway thank you very much.

I agree completely, society has put WAY too much emphisis on the "coathanger look" (hehe i love that word for them, thx harley). it makes young girls so weight crazy.

I think super-skinny models look sickly. Most of them have bad attitudes and could double as drug addicts. One reason they stay so skinny, is because of the cocaine diet. Your body keeps burning energy, but you don't eat. It's a very easy and terrible unhealthy lifestyle these girls live.

They are creatures of circumstance. Along time ago, someone lied to them and told them this is how things should be. Disgusting, to say the least. Until we change to image and perception of what beauty really is, young men and women will be subject to the likes of Paris Hilton, and other over glorified attention whores.

Hopefully, the next few generations won't accept this false need for fame.

I agree that models are way to thin and this puts pressure on younger females to be just as thin, if not thinner. Working in the medical field it is sad to see a young anorexia female in complete danger of dying becasue she wants to look like a certain model or actress. This subject is very near and dear to my heart and I hope to follow it closely.
