I think it was a smart business move, if the money was right. I am sure in the agreement, since the brand will probably still carry the Tommy name and logo, Hilfiger will have some say in the merchandise this company sells. He may have just sold designer rights, not the rights to the company. Many designers do not design under their name, but rather have a contract with another designer to create clothing for them. The original designer holds the rights to the company, while the new designer holds the credit to the clothing.
I tend to believe that most people buy items because of the name, not the designer that is creating the clothing. They could be ugly as sin, but people would keep buying...just like retailers such as Abercrombie and Holister...notice how their clothing keeps shrinking and the price keeps growing...people keep buying because it is Abercrombie. Back in the early 90's, you could buy A&F jeans for less than $40 or $50. I just bought a pair over the weekend and they cost $130!! Some people are loyal to the brand.

You can't really tell that by now (?) Maybe it's going to be a bad move, or a good move which I of course hope it's going to be.
