I've taken Textiles for my GCSE's and i realy want to do well in it. i have to make a garment (dress, underwear, anything) with the theme butterflies as the design brief. I plan on going all out and make my own advert, acsessories im also going to get someone to write an fake magazine artical about my garment. just to make my final presantation a little more interesting. & im wondering if anybody has any ideas/suggestions for what else i could do & if they have any nice ideas for a dress or skirt x

What fantastic ideas you have!

I think Matthew Williamson may have had something to do with butterflies....

Stella McCartney did some sunglasses with a silver metal butterfly placed on the frames - perhaps she's incorporated butterfly motifs into other items, worth a look maybe?

Anna Sui uses Butterflies frequently, more in logos and marketing campaigns than on the actual clothing, but worth checking out all the same.

I thought you might be interested to know that Butterflies are symbolic of change.
It might be a nice idea to hone in on the symbology or butterflies in a more abstract view rather than a plain old butterfly, as I suspect if all your classmates have the same brief there will be lots of similar butterflies, perhaps concentrate on the patterns on the wings or create a garment with the idea of flight/wings in mind (am thinking fluttery batwing style sleeves or floaty batik printed chiffon with butterfly win pattern design).

The wonderful thing about art/textiles is that you can interpret it/express it how you wish, the word butterfly is just the beginning, think about how you can elaborate on this theme and stand out from your class mates.

Firstly good luck!! Sounds great!!!! The only thing i can think of that might help you is that in Christina Aguilera video Fighter there is a scene when shes on the wall and loads of moths are around her and on her dress (which is quite amazing) you could use the same concept but with butterflys! ( you can see the video at Yahoo Music videos!) I also once heard of a designer who put real butterflys under a piece of netting on a wedding dress! Crazy but kinda cool! Not really recommending that you use real butterflies though!! :) I also saw a top that was made from the shape of a butterfly! The wings go up and cover your chest going around to the back ( i think it was strapless ) it was beautiful because it had all the pretty colours of a butterfly!! Good Luck and let us know what you come up with! And post pics!!
