the best beads are at jewelry and gem shows... they usually have them a few times throughout the year and a TON of people come in and sell these great beads for wholesale price, every kind you can imagine!...the company I work for makes and sells jewelry so i know from experience they are great!

Hi,

I am more than willing to help. There is a company called Holts in Hatton Garden, London. I'm sure they have a website in which you can buy beads and gemstones from. But, I would suggest actually going there as it is open to the public. I know we have an online shop ourselves, but with certain things like beads etc, it is always best to physically see them first.

I make my own jewellery, I tend to use a number of places as someone else mentioned Crystal Beads Shop - Creative Handmade Beaded Jewellery. (http://www.crystal-beads.co.uk/) are good, but I also use The Spellbound Bead Co Welcome to Spellbound (http://www.spellboundbead.co.uk)

You can also get some extremely good beads and findings brand new on ebay.

I am a glass bead artisan. I started making jewelry because I had so many of beads lying around. I didn't know what else to do with them. I started with inexpensive beads and findings that could be found at local craft stores. It kept my expenses low during the learning phase. Also, pick up a couple of magazines like "Bead and Button". They are FULL of information that can get you started in designing your own jewelry. I found their tips for beginners to be extremely helpful. The mag is also full of ads for online places to purchases special finding and beads online.

Bead shows are also awesome, but I can tell you from experience. . . You really need to understand what you are looking for before you go to buy. It helps to be able to identify the gem stones, their cuts and their quality so that you don't end up paying too much for something that is not worth the extra expense.

Firemountain gems is a fantastic resource for quality goods. Their customer service is impecible and they have many designs and tutorials on their website that may inspire you. Also, they offer free catalogs and that's a beautiful thing, IMO. I no longer buy from them because buy in large quantities and they are bit pricey.

i make my jewelery out of anything lying around! and people always compliment my scrap made jewelery more than the stuff i buy. i made a bracelet out of bright green duct tape. sounds bad but people love it. and i made a necklace out of a big button and some strategically tied string. be creative!

I like jewelrysupply.com & beadsinbulk.com...if you live in the NYC area, there's tons of great places in the garment district.

If you're a professional designer, I would NOT recommend places like Rag Shop or Michael's. Those stores are more for people who do it as a hobby.

My sister-in-law makes! She is very good and she sells too. But now she just got a baby, too busy to make. All jewelry she wears are made by herself. She has a brand name, but I don't think you can google it because I don't think she's got her website yet, so no point to tell.

She said it is not difficult to make. All you need are all tools and good taste.

I think it's a great idea to make your own jewelry. Of course, there are different levels of "make your own". I am a colored stone dealer and when I go on buying trips often I buy things that I know are not likely to sell, and that I don't have any particular project in mind for. When I started in this business I always focused on buying things that would sell quickly because I had to pay the bills!

It is way more fun to buy things that are beautiful and special to you so once or twice every trip I do just that. Rest assured that this isn't a plug for a product because these are not for sale! I guess if someone else out there loves them and begs me to make another set then maybe, but that's not likely. I am sure you have not even heard of Mali Garnet which is the primary stone in this set- and people don't pay for stones that they've not heard of.

Remember that it doesn't have to be expensive to have colored-stone jewelry custom-made and many local jewelers can help you in this venture. Many people think that custom-designed jewelry is for the super-rich but nothing could be further from the truth. Buy stones that you like and take them to your local jeweler and find a stock mount. It's not that tough and if you pick a basic mount it isn't expensive. Just remember to buy calibrated stones! These are stones that fit standard mounts. Any stone dealer can tell you whether a particular stone will fit standard mounts or not. Is it calibrated? That is the most important question to keep your mounting costs down.

My sister makes her own jewelry. She is very good at it. She usually gets some supplies at Michaels and other such craft stores. She also gets some custom pieces from the local jewelry stores. They will make a piece for her, or they will give her scrap to work with.

Sometimes, they even feature her work. She uses a lot of beads, but she will work with anything from gold, silver, platinum, pearls, plastics, cubics, etc...

I'll try to get some pictures for you guys!

I have heard that Hatton Garden is amazing. I study gemology with GIA and they have a campus there and I would love to do a class at that location but as I live in Asia it is much cheaper for me to go to Bangkok- both because of the airfare and the hotel prices!

Are the stores mostly finished jewelry, or are there a lot of dealers who do loose gemstones? Also, what is the largest gem show in London? Thanks for any help you can provide!!

Have you heard about the news? Ornella Muti launches her first jewels collection in Cannes, on 16th of May, on Movies Festival. The first jewel is a bracelet with handcuffs and description in manipuri "free me, if you love me...." I've heard that the bracelet will be distributed only via Networking, because she (Ornella) wanted to be more close to her fans, consumers, clients, and decided to promote and distribute its jewelry collection by the new and advanced way ....
I've already heard that le bracelet was presented on Tribecca's festival in NY at the end of April and had already a big success (some movies stars had it on hand, during the gala ceremony)...
