LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Here's one "guitar greats" list that Jimi Hendrix (news) did not top: "the 100 greatest metal guitarists of all time."

According to Guitar World magazine, the No. 1 metal guitarist is Tony Iommi, the God-fearing axeman with pioneering English heavy metal band Black Sabbath.

Six musicians claimed the next four spots: Metallica (news - web sites)'s James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett tied at No. 2; AC/DC siblings Angus and Malcolm Young at No. 3; Randy Rhoads (news), the late sideman for Ozzy Osbourne, at No. 4; and Eddie Van Halen (news), of the foursome that bears his name, at No. 5. Hendrix was No. 12, six places behind Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page (news).

The list appears in the magazine's March issue, which hits newsstands next week.

According to Guitar World editor-in-chief Brad Tolinski, the criteria for the list were purity and innovation. He said Iommi never strayed from a basic formula of B-tuned guitars played very loudly, plenty of power chords and slower rhythms.

"He's essentially the guy that created most of the conventions for heavy metal," Tolinski said. Iommi's "shining moment" is the track "Warning" from the band's self-titled 1970 debut album, according to the poll.

If Black Sabbath started the heavy metal ball rolling, then Metallica kept it alive, Tolinski said, pointing to the 1984 track "Creeping Death" as the band's stand-out.

Page's relatively low No. 6 ranking raised some eyebrows since Led Zeppelin also helped pave the way for heavy metal. But Tolinski said Page would be the first to admit that his playing also incorporates blues and folk. Similarly, Eddie Van Halen has always had a foot in the pop world, he added.

Hendrix, who died in 1970, introduced some of the genre's conventions, but Tolinski termed him more of a "futuristic blues player" than a heavy metal guitarist.

well thats complete crap, well no, better than ever but still crap, firstly i know children aged 15 that can do what jimi hendrix did at the prime of his career, he was never an 'amazing guitarist' he isnt technical as such, more so than some but still not to a great extent.

the only reason he was so in the press was cos of the setting things on fire on stage, thats it. Tony, IMO is a much better guitarist but still not the worlds best, there are some japanese guitarists out there that are amazing and i dont just mean fast!

also steve vai, and satriani and the japanese dude touring with G3 currently, those 3 should take up spots one two and three and hendrix shouldnt even be in the top 10!!!

fairly ill note he did create a new style or 3 of music but still, this is about his guitar playing ability and most people can now honestly name 5 people they would rather mimic on the guitar then hendrix.

another few are slash (GNR) and nuno bettencourt (Extreme), now they both looked good on stage, both played nicely and impressed the audience but still lack the technical features of vai and satriani.

these polls do my head in, they're usually taken by the people that buy it right? and everyone that knows nothing writes in and says hendrix just cos they know his name, forget the fact that he is actually shit LOL, ok so i know he didnt win but it just pisses me off.

glad iommi one, better but maybe next year they'll do summet good

some pics of nuno BTW:

btw, he produced an album for a portuguese singer that's quite decent... actually my favourite song "made in portugal" is from that album, "try again".

TRY AGAIN
----------------------
letra: Nuno Bettencourt
música: Nuno Bettencourt

One look - you know that you've fallen
She knocks you over
You say this is it
Perfect - straight from a movie
He says all the right things
You know he's the one
Next time arround try again
Weeks pass it's still kind a perfect
My heart's removed now
I gave it to you
Passion - you constantly move me
Further and further
Reaching my soul
Next time arround try again
Tonight - plans for a movie
You call me to cancel
Girls going dancing
Sundays our romantic picnics
Turn into football
Boys will be boys now
Months pass - knowing you love me
I take you forever
Together for granted
Next time arround try again
Home late - you wont even kiss me
The eyes of my angel
Accuse me i'm guilty
Follow me - to my friends house
Hide cause we're dying
Jealusy is cancer
Next time arround try again
You never give any space or any time
To breed... Try again
Sometimes i wish you'd leave me alone
And get away from me... Try again
I can't believe you'd say these things if
You're in love with me... Try again
I never thought you'd say those awful
Things to me... again
Oh no - the roses i gave you
Are suddenly fading
Along with your love
Who cares - the credits are rolling
Love's just a movie
There's always an end
Love's... What it is... It just is
Love's... What it is... It just is

no, slash isnt amazing, he is a fairly fast guitar player but isnt that technical, chad greoger (spl.) from nickleback is actually more talented belive it or not, the thing with slash is his style, he just looks good, infact he looks amazing but 'technically' isnt that great a guitar player..shame really
