Don't you think it'd make more sense if vocals replaced lyrics?

In the case of lyrics vs. instrumentals, instrumental any day, but vocals are just as important as instruments.

For me the Vocals and Instrumentals parts are almost equally important. The actual lyrics dont really play a part in it but the way things are sung are very important for me.

Well I find myself listening to more instrumental music than I do poetry. So I would imagine instrumentals.

I'd have to say instrumentals, because without them, it'd just be words, and that'd be really boring...like rap...

I'm with <Jane> here. Plus, I can't imagine hearing an acapella version to any Iron Maiden song. :P

While I know people who do value lyrics over instrumentals, and refuse to listen to songs that they don't like the lyrics of, I'm not like that.

I love music. Words are just a bonus, sometimes. When the lyrics are bad I just ignore them.

Yep.....pretty much. Music is the best.

I used to be a lyrics purist, in that if I didn't understand them, I couldn't really appreciate the song. I think I'm through that phase, but I still love it when bands can write truly "together" lyrics.

Note that I said "understand", not necessarily agree with. I don't really care about what you're saying, so long as I do know what it is that you're saying.

As far as the original question is concerned, I would tend to treat vocals as an instrument (and from a technical standpoint, it *is* just another instrument). I guess, then, the whole of a band minus vocals is "more important" than just vocals -- but it's much like the "What's the most important part in a car?" question, 'cause what's the right answer there?

The axles.

The axles.

That's nice, but those axles aren't doing anything if you haven't got any wheels. And even if they are doing something, you can't control it without a steering wheel... etc, etc.

:-P

Depends completely on the lyrics. I really like the instruments in a lot of Earth Crisis songs, but the lyrics... come on...

It ruins it for me.
