SOAD are one of my favourite bands and their style of music seems to change album by album. I was wondering what genre this awesome band would be placed into?

I also really like SOAD's style. And you are right about how they seemingly change genres every album. To be honest, I'm not even sure what genre you'd place them in. Probably the "We don't give a shit---so we'll play polka music on our new record" genre :p

Alt-metal.
Metal is the straight chugga-chugga-chugga style in Shadows Fall and In Flames and bands like that. Alternative Metal still has the whole metal intensity but doesn't do the super-cliche' chugga-chugga-chugga thing very often.
They're not prog, they're not American Metal (the guys are Armenian!), and they're not any form of progressive metal- they're alt-metal.
I think that my favorite track by them is either "Violent Pornography" or "Cigaro" or "Deer Dance". Those are all awesome tracks.
I was a big fan of Steal this Album! too- anyone else really like that one? It got mixed reviews from fans and critics....I thought the experimentation was great, and provided a nice bridge between the hard-hitting "Toxicity" and the more experimentally-minded "Mesmerize", although I think Hypnotize went too experimental.

I'd say they're nu-metal really. I don't like them too much. I think their older stuff is a lot better than the newer material really.

I moved it.
It's not rock/alt/punk, that's for sure...

I beg to differ. They might be nu-metal but theyre just as close to rock also.
Also, theres no such thing as alternative metal. That was just created by people who like metal but dont want to admit that they like a non-metal band. So to have that bad included in all things metal, they just call it alternative metal. Thats like soft metal. Its an oxymoron.
I am personally not a system of a down fan. I used to listen to them back in the day but those days are long gone. I'll probably be at Ozzfest and watch them perform but I'm not looking foward to it.

They're alright, but not worthy of listening to over and over and over again.

I thought their album Toxicity was really catchy, nothing else I've heard by them has come even close to it though

I still love all of their stuff, although I do think that "Hypnotize" is the weakest of all their albums. I think "Mesmerize" is one of their strongest, though.
I can understand why they're not enjoyed by the metal scene, though- they don't really focus on the metal aspects of their sound too much any more. They focus more on the artistic, creative, other-genre influences part of their sound. Not that metal can't be artistic and creative. Their creativity just leans away from metal.
I love 'em.

Yeah not too much metal anymore... they play more type stuff you'd hear on the radio. I don't know how I feel about their music really because I haven't listened to enough of it, but I really like that "B.Y.O.B." song mainly because of how strange it is.

Daron said in a public statement that Ozzfest will be their last tour four a few years and that after it they'll be on a hiatus.

SOAD is one of my favorites too. Just because they are so weird and obnoxious. LOL I completely admire bands that can change their sound from cd to cd and still stay true, absolutely true to themselves. SOAD accomplishes that.
As for genre, well, I hate the genre game. But hardcore rock, maybe? Is that even a genre? Heh, I feel so old just now, lol.
:D,
