Do any of you guys listen to classical music? I listen to classical music a lot not just Western but also Indian classical music.

But strictly only instrumentals I should say. I like Bach, Mozart and Beethoven and I think they're excellent in what they did.

I also like Nikhil Banerjee, Ravi Shankar and the great Amjad Ali Khan, Amjad who is probably the most virtuostic sarod (fretless sitar) player in the world.

So what kind of classical music do you like...?

I listen to a lot of classical like the Western ones you like, I've never really looked into any other areas classical

I mainly listen to Austrian composers.
Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss Sr. and Jr., Haydn, Schubert, Brahms, and Schonberg.

No, my 5th grade teacher used to play it during class, and well, I just blocked my eyes.

Classical music is annoying. =P

Block your eyes? Are you synesthetic?

I'm guessing that since your brain can't decipher which senses do what...you probably can't even comprehend how to tie your own shoes, much less the complexities of classical music. :p

I wouldn't poke fun if I didn't know that you were a crappy spammer who does post exchanges 16 hours a day. See if you can cram one more link in your sig, one more piss-poor site would make it really sexy.

I like Ravi Shankar's stuff- I have to be in the mood but it's pretty cool.

I like Pachelbel and Handel, especially. I can never keep Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart straight in my mind, so I can never really say if I like any of them, lol.

Cool, he's quite ordinary in the sitar/sarod world really... He's an excellent player but there are better musicians as well as better technicians that simply haven't been blessed to be so popular. It's a shame really that someone like Nikhil Banerjee isn't that famous.

I really like both Classical and Inidan Classical music. I find instrumental to be my main genre of music, it just so peaceful and relaxing.

How old are you? I didn't like it when I was younger, but as I matured I discovered newfound appreciation for the art and beauty of classical. I love it now.

That’s funny…I would sooner confuse Bach with Pachelbel and Handel than Beethoven and Mozart because he’s baroque like Pachelbel and Handel. He was younger than them but Handel is considered his contemporary and Pachaelbel was the godfather of one of J.S. Bach’s sisters and teacher to his older brother. Bach, in my opinion, is the best of the best. He is my hero.

Ok, so I've recently discovered Glenn Gould's performances of Bach's keyboard works (e.g. The Goldberg Varriations) and I can't stop listening to them. Has anyone else heard anything by Glenn Gould?

Here’s a link to a brief bio on the website set up by his record company:

Here’s the wiki:

There was film that came out a while ago about him called Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould (a reference to the 30 varrations and two arias in the Goldberg Varriations). There was a simpsons episode that did a spoof on the movie called 22 Short Films About Springfield.

Have you ever paid attention to what movies like the Lord of the Rings would be like without their music? A lot of that is modern day classical music.

I'm classically trained in piano but things are getting a bit old.
Anyone have any suggestions to what composers I should go towards?

I like really aggressive(take out my angerrr.. haha) or really romantic classical music.

Try Vivaldi's Largo, it's very nice. I play it a lot on violin. Pretty much anything four seasons is nice. I play both Handel and Bach, and yes I understand the confusion. I have trouble placing composers with their music sometimes. Especially if they wrote similar music. I'll remember that I like them...probably remember bits of music. But for the life of me I may not be able to keep them straight.

So I've been trying to conquer The Flight of the Bumblebee by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
Not going so good. lol

Also trying out Maple Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin.
VERY confusing. Ragtime is quite a challenge.

Ever tried anything by Sergei Rachmaninoff? He's a mid-20th century piano genius. His pieces, while extremely challenging technically, are some of the most engaging works created in the last 100 years.

And anything Chopin will have a highly melodic and lyric Romantic melody -- but you probably know this by now :-P

I regularly throw on Mozart's Requiem while I'm doing work. Or Holst's 'the Planets'. I love classical music... for some reason to me it sounds so pure compared to my usual tastes.

Yeah, when I'm reading a book for class or studying I'll often throw on some classical music as well, it's really relaxing and is much better than having what my roommates are doing being my background noise.

Have you heard kronos' Sculthorpe, Philip Glass and Jimi Hendrix recording?

(yes, they recorded purple rain on one of their albums).

I also listen to john cage all the time, 4:33 is something I can perform for myself anywhere at any time.

you know, I wonder what modern day music would sound like without the classical composers we know of and love today.
